Our Community

Transformative. Welcoming. Fun loving.

As a member of the POGIL community, you are part of something bigger than yourself.  You are empowering students to become more self-directed, inquisitive, independent thinkers  and helping them develop skills to be successful leaders and problem solvers. As a practitioner, you are joining a community of like-minded educators who share similar goals in advancing best practices in student-centered learning and who also enjoy spending time together. We are not just an organization...

We are a community working together to bring about true change in education.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Project is committed to being intentional, clear, systemic, and ongoing in efforts focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strive for those who interact with The POGIL Project, whether as a student, instructor, facilitator, or author, to feel comfortable, supported, and valued.
The Community Report
What started with five chemistry professors who wanted better outcomes for their students has grown into a community of thousands of POGIL practitioners and supporters who are transforming education within and beyond the classroom.  We hope you will take a few minutes to explore this year's report and learn more about the people, the community, the history, the initiatives, and the deep commitment to student learning that we all share at The POGIL Project.
Community of Transformation

In a 2015 study headed by Adrianna Kezar of The Pullias Center at the University of Southern California, The POGIL Project was one of four organizations identified as a new and unique type of organization called a Community of Transformation— a community that not only improves the practices of its members, but also achieves systemic change for greater impact. Kezar's study found that what drives these communities is a "focus on exploring philosophically, in deep and fundamental ways, how science is taught."

POGIL Learning Communities

POGIL Learning Communities are an initiative in the POGIL Project to broaden participation, deepen community, and create equitable pathways to leadership opportunities in the POGIL Project. The goal of this program is to support a diverse set of new practitioners through their beginning years of implementation to improve retention of underrepresented instructors in the POGIL Project.

Community through COVID

With the devastation of the COVID pandemic came new innovation from our practitioners as we moved virtual for workshops and events. Staying connected through the pandemic was only achieved with great community support and participation. Now that we are back with in-person offerings, we are thrilled to have face-to-face interactions once again. Click to learn more about our workshops and events and teaching through COVID
