Joan Roque, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the Univesity of Puerto Rico at Cayey. She completed her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey and her graduate degree in chemistry at North Carolina State University. After completing her PhD, she received an NIH Research Supplement to Support Diversity and completed her postdoc at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then joined Westminster College in Utaj and learned about student-centered teaching strategies, including POGIL, which she has been using since then. Joan is also passionate about increasing diversity in higher education. She serves as the chair of the “POGIL Addressing Equity” recruiting group. In her free time, Joan enjoys her master’s-level coursework, spends time watching tv and playing videogames with her husband, and is a proud parent of a chihuahua mix, Jack, and two parrots, Amy and JJ (a parrotlet and a caique).
