Guiding Students to Develop Essential Skills

Clif Kussmaul

Abstract: “Students should interact with one another to practice skills and construct their own understanding, with assistance from a teacher acting as a coach and guide---not a lecturer.” Faculty often feel pressured to “cover” more course content and feel that there is not enough time for students to learn key concepts while also developing skills that employers seek such as communication, teamwork, information processing, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Faculty also feel students are disengaged and struggle to think critically and solve problems. What more could faculty do to help students engage in the classroom, master content, and develop important skills? POGIL can actually help with that through various activities and guided learning.
