Application Period: Review of applications will begin on Mar 7, 2025. 
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Submissions received by March 7, 2025 will be given priority consideration.
Decision Date: Initial decisions will be made by March 31, 2025
Implementation: Course(s) during 2025-2026 Academic Year including Summer 2026
 
Two steps to submit your proposal

Proposals must include the following:
  • Project Title
  • Lead Instructor(s): Proposals may include more than one instructor at a single institution. 
For the Institution please include: 
  • Institution name/Institution address
  • Description of institutional context for this course (250-word maximum). Description should include the total number of students expected to enroll in all sections of this course for the 2025-2026 Academic Year. How decisions are made for the course (e.g., all subsection instructors are independent, an instructional team, departmental committee, chair, etc.)
For each Instructor of record, please include:
  • Name, title, phone number, email address
  • Two professional references: include the name, title, institution/company, affiliation, phone # and email address for two professional references
  • Any prior use of POGIL in teaching, and involvement in The POGIL Project Community. List any recent POGIL workshop facilitated or attended.
  • Description of the course that will be transformed (250-word maximum). 
Description should include:
  • Course dates during the 2025 - 2026 academic year (including summer 2026.
  • The expected number of students who will enroll in the transformed course(s).
  • The type of classroom (e.g., auditorium-style, fixed furniture, etc.).
  • How student mastery of content is assessed (e.g., graded homework, quizzes, exams, etc.). 
  • Project Description: Maximum 1000 words. Describe how you currently envision implementing POGIL pedagogy in your course. (We recognize that the proposed strategy could change significantly through conversations with your paired mentor.) Please include any information that relates to the following details:
    • Expected frequency of POGIL activities throughout the semester (e.g., number of times per class/week).
    • Description of student groups (will students be assigned to groups with assigned seating? will students self-select small groups?).
    • Description of facilitation team (e.g., instructor only, instructor with TAs/LAs, TAs/LAs only).
    • Description of post-activity plans: Will there be a reporting out period? If so, how will that be conducted? Will work be turned in for credit? etc.
    • How you plan to assess your project.
    • Long term goals for implementing POGIL in large lecture courses.
       
  • Additional Key Personnel: Description of background related to the proposed project for any additional key personnel (250-word maximum).
     
  • Resource Description: Identity any resources listed below necessary for successful implementation of this Course Transformation Award. (Please include a statement of how each resource identified will contribute towards the success of your course transformation in your Project Description.)
     
    • Travel costs to visit a large enrollment classroom that currently implements the POGIL pedagogy. 
    • Travel and registrations to an appropriate training or professional development event such as a 3-day POGIL workshop or NCAPP meeting in summer 2025.
    • Assistance in training and mentoring Learning Assistants in facilitation.
    • Classroom materials for report-out strategies (e.g., whiteboards).
    • Reduced cost for POGIL activities published through Kendall Hunt.
    • Access to pre-publication versions of 10-15 minute activities optimized for large enrollment classrooms.
    • Software and training to monitor group progress during a POGIL activity that has been used successfully in a large General Chemistry lecture.

Publication of Pedagogical Activities or Materials: A statement that (1) confirms agreement to The POGIL Project’s right of first refusal to publish any pedagogical activities or materials developed as a result of the award; or (2) explains any requested exception; or (3) indicates that no publishable pedagogical activities or materials will be developed during the project.
